Video-conference tools have broken barriers between home life and the classroom -- often in unintentionally amusing or even invasive ways -- but bridging that gap can also have far-reaching and highly positive effects on student engagement, sparking more effective, present, and personal intercultural connections between students both at home and in global communities. Using a coordinated series of home-cooking projects and events as a case study, this presentation showcases some of the ways that video-conference tools allow instructors and learners to create more immediate, culturally-targeted language communities, bridging the space between home and classroom and providing unexpected benefits such as family and friend participation and engagement as well as participation from students abroad. Presenter Jessica Wood is a Senior Lecturer of German at Northern Arizona University with over 20 years’ experience in both the language classroom and home kitchen.
